The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation is to receive an additional £1m in funding following the government's announcement it plans to invest an extra £600m in helping hospitals address their maintenance backlogs.
In the summer, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced £1.5bn in capital funding to help the NHS build back better. Almost 1,800 projects across 178 trusts will now address urgent maintenance issues between now and March 2021.
Refurbished wards, brand-new electrics, and upgraded ventilation systems are just a few of the projects to be undertaken before next Spring. Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, said:
Alongside delivering on our manifesto commitment to build 40 new hospitals and 20 major hospital upgrades across the country, this investment will help our NHS build back better.
These crucial maintenance projects will deliver immediate benefits and provide NHS staff with the facilities they need to provide world-class care to their patients this winter, helping ensure the NHS is always there for you when you need it.
Last month's Spending Review earmarked £1.2bn for new hospitals and upgrades in 2021/2022, plus £4.2bn for NHS operational capital funding. This ongoing investments in hospitals and the NHS is in addition to the mass vaccination programme currently being undertaken in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. The UK is the first in the world to be delivering such a programme. In the EU, roll-out of the vaccine will be organised centrally, with vaccinations not expected even to begin in some parts of the EU (such as Italy) until February 2021.
