The EU uses Rwanda for refugee resettlement. The United Nations uses Rwanda for refugee resettlement, even the Labour government legislated to use safe third countries to process asylum claims.
The Home Secretary has outlined a comprehensive agreement with Rwanda which will work to stem the flow of demand for the boats crossing the Channel. The fundamental principle is that doing nothing is not an option. We have to act to cut off the demand for people smugglers in Calais who have profiteered off of pushing tens of thousands of desperate people into boats across the Channel.
The U.K. has a long and proud history of welcoming refugees and the latest conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the warmth with which we welcome those fleeing war and terror. However, France is a safe country and the illegal people smuggling in the Channel simply has to stop.
This Home Secretary is facing the issue head-on and her latest announcement underscores the commitment of the British Government to taking refugees directly from the displaced countries such as Ukraine and Afghanistan and welcoming them here into Britain - the legal way.
