He also referenced the decision to grant a year-long 'derogation' to sugar beet farmers in relation to the use of neonicotinoid pesticides. It should be noted that EU law (now adopted in UK law) permits the short-term use of such pesticides in order to protect against disease (in this case the Beet Yellows blight) - and that there are many protections in place for bees and other pollinators.
