After many years of campaigning, research and care charity Breast Cancer Now, has secured a secondary breast cancer audit.
Since 2013, it has been compulsory for NHS trusts to collect data on people diagnosed with secondary breast cancer - but in 2016 the charity discovered that two-thirds of hospital trusts in England were not collecting full data. Since then, the charity has called upon the government to undertake national secondary breast cancer audits to collect data on diagnosis, treatment, and access to support. A new audit has now been secured.
Though it will take time to set up and collect the data, as a result of this work, future research and provision of services can be based on evidence, not estimates - and Breast Cancer Now has played a leading role in securing the new audit.
