Jerome was shocked to read the Norfolk Safeguarding Adults Board Review into the deaths of three young adults who had learning disabilities and had been patients at Cawston Park Hospital. They sadly died within a 27-month period (April 2018 to July 2020).
Commenting Jerome said: "Having read the Norfolk Safeguarding Adults Board Review into the deaths at Cawston Park Hospital I was genuinely shocked with what I read. I have asked for a meeting with the Chief Executive of the local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Melanie Craig, to discuss the response of the CCG to the significant criticisms made of it and to be clear on how they have changed their work practices in response. I will also be submitting an Urgent Question on Monday asking the Minister what actions the Department for Health and Social Care is taking to the address the findings of the review."
"Whilst a more sensitive subject for obvious reasons, I have also met with the Police to understand what consideration has been given for criminal prosecution both of individuals directly involved in mistreatment and recklessly poor care, as well as corporately. I do not want this to be a “lessons must be learned” type response followed up by little effective change. One of the worst aspects that filters through the report is the sense of powerlessness of the families, who could see that need was desperate and acute, yet were simply ignored."
