This country has led the world in addressing climate change. However, buildings and construction are hardly accounted for and yet contribute 25% of UK carbon emissions. My Carbon Emissions (Buildings) Bill, which had its Second Reading in the House of Commons today, takes the first step in requiring measurement for buildings over 1,000 square metres by proposing mandatory reporting of embodied carbon on significant building work from 2023 (and from 2025 for housing), and the introduction of limits from 2027. This will bring growth to areas of UK industry that are innovating in pursuit of low-carbon construction products, from steel and concrete to timber and biomaterials.
