This is a joint post with Jerome Mayhew and Duncan Baker as the two MPs that cover the North Norfolk District Council area.
During September, October and November our constituents have been complaining about a large number of their bins not being emptied.
This was due to the collections being changed and in the resulting weeks we were told of 2,000 missed collections in the Autumn period.
After writing to the Leader of the Council, the situation didn’t improve, so late last week we sat down with Cllr Tim Adams for an explanation and to hear what was being done to rectify the problems.
We are pleased that this situation is finally improving, although we understand some bins suffered missed collections because bin lids were stuck frozen last week. Another issue to sort out.
I argued that the scale of problems was a breach of contract and asked about compensation for tax payers.
In the contract there are “performance deductions” payable for missed collections. Given thousands of bins were missed, this figure payable to the Council is potentially very significant.
Rate payers should not have to suffer because the council has failed to operate their bin contract adequately.
We have asked that consideration is given to returning this “compensation” to the community so North Norfolk can benefit from this disruption rather than the money swallowed back into NNDC. We feel strongly that tax payers should be compensated over this issue.
We will update you pending once the council has considered this.
We very much now hope people’s bins do get emptied over the busy Festive period but as ever if you encounter issues please do not hesitate to contact us.
